Literacy is more than knowing how to read and write; it is knowing how to think and how to express one’s thoughts and feelings. It allows us to share the fullness of our lives with others, enriching the whole world.
Reading acquaints us with the rich possibilities of life. When we read, we explore notions about what sorts of people there might be, what sorts of things they might think and feel, what sort of things they might do, and what their life outcomes might be.

It critically teaches us how to separate fact from fiction in these notions. The wealth that reading gives us, in our vocabulary and notions, allows us to better understand ourselves and others and to form deeper relationships. Literacy builds both strong individual identities and strong communities.
In our literature classes, we cultivate literacy by emphasizing active participation from all class members in out-loud readings and discussions, which involve both guided and open questions, addressed to individuals and the class as a whole.
In Upper School, we emphasize the importance of using inflection while reading aloud to better understand the weight words carry. Together, we work to develop closely reasoned interpretations of the text, exploring the possibilities, synthesizing different views, creating a community of learners.
